How Long Does Mobile Tyre Fitting Take?
For a standard single tyre replacement, mobile tyre fitting typically takes 30 to 45 minutes from the moment the technician arrives at your location. A full set of four tyres usually takes 60 to 90 minutes.
That’s the short answer. But if you’re trying to plan around a school run, a work meeting, or a journey, the full picture is a bit more useful.
Arrival time vs fitting time – they’re not the same thing
When people ask how long it takes, they usually mean the total time from booking to driving away. There are two separate parts to that:
Arrival time – how long until the technician gets to you. At K1 Dover Tyres we aim to reach you within 20 minutes across Kent, though exact timing depends on where you are and how busy the day is.
Fitting time – the actual work once the technician arrives. This is where the 30–90 minute range comes in.
If you’re booking in advance rather than calling in an emergency, you pick a slot that suits you, so arrival time isn’t a factor you need to worry about.

What affects how long the job takes?
Number of tyres being replaced
A single tyre is a straightforward job. Two tyres on one axle takes a bit longer. A full set of four takes proportionally more time the technician removes each wheel, fits the new tyre, balances the wheel, and refits it one by one.
Job | Typical fitting time |
|---|---|
Single tyre replacement | 30 – 45 minutes |
Two tyres (one axle) | 45 – 60 minutes |
Full set of four | 60 – 90 minutes |
Puncture repair (if repairable) | 20 – 30 minutes |
Repair vs replacement
If your tyre has a puncture in the central tread area, it may be repairable rather than needing a full replacement. A repair is generally quicker than a full fitting typically 20 to 30 minutes. The technician will inspect the damage first before confirming whether a repair is possible. Sidewall damage, large punctures, or tyres that have been driven on flat are usually not repairable and will need replacing.
Wheel balancing
Every tyre replacement includes wheel balancing as part of the job. This is done inside the mobile fitting van using a balancing machine it adds a few minutes per wheel but it’s not something that should be skipped. Proper balancing affects ride comfort, tyre wear, and safety.
Locking wheel nuts
If your car has locking wheel nuts, the technician will need the key to remove the wheels. If you’re not sure where yours is, it’s usually in the boot near the spare wheel or in the glovebox. Having it ready saves time and avoids delays.
If the locking wheel nut key is lost or the nut is damaged or seized, that’s a different job entirely specialist removal tools are required, and it will take longer. Worth mentioning this when you book.
Vehicle type
Most cars and small vans are straightforward. Larger vehicles, SUVs with bigger alloys, or vehicles with non-standard fittings can take slightly longer due to tyre size and wheel weight.
What happens during the fitting?
So you know what the technician is actually doing during that time. Once on site, the process typically goes:
- Vehicle check confirm the tyre size, inspect the wheel and surrounding area
- Remove the wheel
- Strip the old tyre from the rim
- Fit the new tyre
- Balance the wheel in the van
- Refit to the vehicle and torque the nuts correctly
- Check tyre pressures across all four tyres
- Final visual check before signing off
It’s a proper job done to the same standard as a garage just carried out at your location. If you want to understand the full process, our guide to what mobile tyre fitting is and how it works covers it in more detail.
Is mobile fitting faster than going to a garage?
Usually, yes especially when you factor in driving there, waiting your turn, and driving back. A garage visit for a single tyre can easily take two hours of your day once travel and waiting time are included. With a mobile fitter coming to your home or workplace, the total disruption to your day is much smaller.
